Bigger is Better

bear2093.jpg
This critter approached my car within a few feet after I stopped to take his pic, with no fear at all. It wasn’t aggressive but extremely curious. I’ve parked and walked along the side of the road here taking pics of wildflowers and hiked the AT nearby alone countless times. To encounter a bear of this size in my car showing no fear at all is a little troubling, especially with recent bear attacks. I might be a little naive to think a walking stick and pepper spray would deter a determined bear. I don’t think it would.
I’m posting the pics larger to see how it goes, now 800px wide instead of 600px. The smaller images are fine on standard 1024×768 displays but are too small for more modern displays. I might do away with the sidebar on the right but I like having the archive links there. If you have formatting problems on your monitor let me know.

  1. Nice shot! I think that would make me a bit nervous as well. Having backpacked nearly 900 miles of the AT, I have yet to see a bear on the trail. I’ve seen plenty of other critters including moose and porcupines, but no bears. Enjoying the larger format too. -D

  2. I just found your blog via Floyd. Your pictures are stunning – I like them a lot.
This bear picture is nice, but must have been scary event.

  3. Nice shot.
I lose the right 20% though on my old fashioned 1024×768 laptop.
Maybe there’s a way to just have an optional stylesheet switch which makes the sidebar thinner?

  4. That’s a pretty scary picture. Beautiful, but scary.

  5. I’ve been tinkering with the idea of larger images myself. We shall see. 800px works for most monitors except those who still set their resolution to that 800px size.
It always amazes me, the people who will see a cute, little bear in a national park and think… oooo, teddy bear and have their kids get out to see it closer. They tend to freak me out a bit and yep, I wonder if my old walking stick with a bell would have just pointed the way to easy dinner instead of away from me.
